Welcome to the Mars Surface Rover Facilitator Guide. The learning activity you are about to facilitate is fun as well as educational. The Mars Surface Rover provides a convincing demonstration of how different leadership styles affect both the leaders and those they lead. It does this by having teams, under the guidance of different leadership styles, build a motorized model of a vehicle designed to travel on Mars. The idea for the Mars Surface Rover arose out of the need for a hands-on demonstration of facilitative leadership. Facilitative leadership, which entails teaching others to lead themselves, has become an important force in moving to team-based organizations. Unfortunately, traditional managers, trying to learn to be facilitative, were having difficulty understanding what that meant. As trainers, we were only able to go so far in our verbal or written explanations of what it was like to facilitate rather than direct. The Mars Surface Rover allows participants to experience first hand the differences between facilitative and traditional or passive leadership. Used looks complete.
