This U shaped magnet was conceived as a better alternate to the bar shaped magnet. In a bar magnet, the electric field flows in opposite direction for both poles which makes it weaker. In contrast, a U shaped magnet is designed to make the current flow in the same direction for both the poles. By doing this, a strong magnetic field, twice that of a bar shaped magnet, is produced around both the poles.
